In April 1966 Time magazine carried a front page emblazoned with the question “Is God Dead?”  As we approached the end of the twentieth century the assumption in the West was that organised religion would slowly die away and secularism/atheism would become the dominant narrative.  However events over the last twenty years have challenged that assumption.  What this course will do is look at some of the many ways that religion and religious belief continues to influence the public sphere specifically in the UK. Topics covered will include media, politics and the state, law, education, and public ritual.

The course will be interactive and it is hoped that participants will share their own insights and experience.
